Spheres of Influence
The Interdependent Works of Robert and Sonia Delaunay
Through influencing each other’s creative styles and interpretations, Robert and Sonia Delaunay diverged from Cubist and Fauvist conceptions into an ambiguous new territory. Spheres of Influence: The Interdependent Works of Robert and Sonia Delaunay is a museum exhibit focused on how their separate works and focuses interplay with each other. Their interdependent nature was emphasized through their diverse works, often layering upon each other’s ideas, conversations, and even physical works. Orphism, a movement defined by theories of simultaneous color and vivid spherical forms, was birthed through their collaborative dynamic. Over their years of exploration into orphic conceptions, the couple continuously gravitated around each other to develop further.
The objective of this project was to research a French artist/figure or social issue and design the exhibition graphics of their show in a museum. We were required to create the identity and graphic standards, exhibition and environmental graphics, narrative literature, and packaging. The design draws from that spherical nature, with interconnected spheres of different styles coming together at different connection points. Bright graphic colors emphasize the color intensity of their works, and are paired with a muted tan for balance.
